UAE boosts investments in renewable energy to build a sustainable green economy

As part of the UAE’s drive towards sustainable development, the UAE has issued Federal Law No. (11) of 2024, which aims to minimize the effects of climate change. The legislation represents a significant step in the country’s journey towards building a green and sustainable economy, setting a comprehensive legal framework for reducing carbon emissions and adapting to the increasing effects of climate change. The law is set to come into force on 30 May 2025, reflecting the country’s determination to achieve its ambitious climate goals.

The importance of this law:

  • Protecting the environment: This law effectively contributes to Sustainable Development Goal 15 by protecting biodiversity and enhancing ecosystem systemic services.
  • Sustainability: It contributes to SDG 7 by encouraging investment in renewable energy, thereby contributing to the provision of clean and affordable energy for all.
  • Adaptation to climate change: Strengthens the country’s ability to adapt to the increasing impacts of climate change, such as sea level rise, drought, and extreme weather events, by supporting investments in sustainable infrastructure, developing early warning systems, and adopting sustainable agricultural practices.
  • International commitment: It also reflects the UAE’s firm commitment to international agreements related to climate change, such as the Paris Agreement, which reinforces its position as a leader in climate action at the global level and contributes to achieving the global goals of sustainable development.
  • Green Economy: This law effectively encourages the transition towards a sustainable green economy, primarily based on renewable energy sources and advanced clean technologies, creating new job opportunities, fostering innovation, and achieving long-term sustainable economic growth.

This law represents a real turning point in the march of sustainable development in the UAE, as it aims to achieve an integrated balance between economic, social, and environmental dimensions. Through a set of comprehensive measures and procedures, the law seeks to build a prosperous green economy and a sustainable society. It reinforces the UAE’s position as a role model in the field of sustainability at the regional and global levels.

In addition, the law contributes to drawing a clear roadmap towards a sustainable future, setting ambitious targets to reduce emissions and move towards carbon neutrality. To achieve these goals, the law establishes a comprehensive framework that includes measurement, reporting, verification mechanisms, and financial and non-financial incentives to encourage the public and private sectors to adopt environmentally friendly practices and strengthen international cooperation to address global climate challenges.

By enacting this law on 30 May 2025, the UAE demonstrates its determination to ensure a sustainable future for future generations. In addition to protecting the environment and combating climate change, this law will boost the national economy, create new job opportunities in green sectors, and improve the quality of life for citizens and residents alike.
